KeithRichards by John PedenSURPRINT

KeithRichards by John PedenSURPRINT

Keith Richards shot by John Peden for the cover of Guitar World sometime in 1986 when I was the editor. Obviously, this b&w shot was not the cover shot but was from the session, which was totally enjoyable. Notice the backdrop John chose. He is the ultimate guitar and amp collector, so he knew Keef would appreciate that the backdrop is made from the tweed material used by Fender for its guitar cases and amp linings. Keith was impressed.

Keith Richards: Guitar World Magazine Cover —March 1986

This is the cover shoot I mentioned below in my caption to this B&W pic from this session. Lissen up, class! The Doctor is in.

The Rolling Stones released their 20th album, "Dirty Work," in March, 1986, the month Keith Richards appeared on this cover of Guitar World, photographed by John Peden. Unfortunately, Keith's then-acrimonious relationship with Mick Jagger was reflected in the recording and the LP was critically dismissed as one of the Stones' worst. But Richards had an endless treasure-trove of material to discuss with writer Gene Santoro, including "Satisfaction" and "Start Me Up."

It was a healthy mix of old and new for Guitar World in 1986.

Billy Gibbons and Edward Van Halen were familiar faces, but readers had yet to see the legendary likenesses of Keith Richards or Jimmy Page on a Guitar World cover. They were in for a particular treat with the July issue, which focused exclusively on Page.

There was also some rookie talent that made its way onto the front page. Yngwie Malmsteen had been making big -- and controversial -- waves in the recording industry since his debut album Rising Force hit store shelves.

And Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens, a man apart from the L.A.-dominated shred-metal army, was dazzling audiences with his creative fretwork, but had already made quite a name for himself in the business as a versatile session player. Both got a chance to define themselves in their first cover stories with Guitar World.

The variety of cover artists clearly enticed readership as this was Guitar World's last six-issue year.

Marcello Mastroianni

Italian postcard by Bromofoto, Milano, no. 460.

Film actor Marcello Mastroianni (1924 - 1996) was Italy's favorite leading man since the 1950’s, as well as one of the finest actors of the European cinema. In his long and prolific career, Mastroianni almost singlehandedly defined the contemporary type of Latin lover, then proceeded to redefine it a dozen times and finally parodied it and played it against type.

For more postcards, a bio and clips of both stars check out our blog European Film Star Postcards.

Denny Miller - Hollywood Tarzan. 2012 by Stephen B Whatley

Denny Miller - Hollywood Tarzan. 2012 by Stephen B Whatley

2012 marks the centenary of Tarzan, the fictional jungle hero created by Edgar Rice Burroughs (USA 1875-1950); in the book, Tarzan of The Apes.

Tarzan was first portrayed on screen in the silent movie, Tarzan of the Apes (1918) by Elmer Lincoln (1889-1952); and numerous films followed through the decades, the Jungle hero played by a diverse range of actors, including Buster Crabbe (1908-1983) Johnny Weissmuller (1904-1984) and Ron Ely (1938-) - who swung across the small screen in a TV series of the late 1960s

Denny Miller (1934-) a former UCLA athlete was selected to play a blonde Lord of the Jungle - blonde Lex Barker (1916-1973) had previously starred in the 1950s - in the 1959 Hollywood film, Tarzan of the Apes; which has become something of a cult movie.

In 2006, artist Stephen B Whatley created a cartoon tribute to some of the Hollywood Tarzans - inspired by his 1970s childhood when there always seemed to be a Tarzan picture playing on TV - which can be seen in the Cartoon Set on this site. In 2010, Denny Miller, one of the last surviving Tarzans of the screen and his wife spotted the tribute and contacted the artist in order to purchase the original drawing.

In the course of correspondence, Denny Miller kindly sent Stephen his 2004 book, 'Didn't You Used to Be What's His Name?', enclosing several dedicated photographs - the most iconic of which inspired this drawing. The actor - who today lives in Las Vegas - is currently working on a new book.

Lynn Collins

Viola Lynn Collins (5' 8" (1.73 m) born May 16, 1977), better known as Lynn Collins, is an American actress. She made television appearances in True Blood and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and is recognized for her roles in films such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine and John Carter.
Collins was born in Houston, Texas, and has stated that she is of Scottish, Irish, and Cherokee descent. She spent her formative years in Singapore, with "summers in Japan where my parents were getting their fourth and fifth and sixth dan [sic] in Shitaru ... Okinawa style Karate". During a childhood Christmas pageant in which she played Mrs. Claus, Collins discovered her love for acting.
She attended the Juilliard School's Drama Division (Group 28: 1995–1999) where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Collins made her television debut in 1999, in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and went on to star onstage as Ophelia opposite Liev Schreiber in Hamlet, followed by a turn as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. After bit parts that included a stint on the show Haunted and roles in the movies Down with Love, 50 First Dates and 13 Going on 30, she gained notice playing Portia in the film The Merchant of Venice, starring opposite Al Pacino, Joseph Fiennes and Jeremy Irons.
She furthered her profile in 2008 when she was cast as Jason Stackhouse's girlfriend Dawn Green in the first season of the HBO vampire series True Blood, and through a featured role as the hero's love interest in the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine opposite Hugh Jackman. Her first leading film role came in 2012 when she was cast as the feisty Martian princess Dejah Thoris in John Carter.
Collins married actor Steven Strait in 2008 after a four-year relationship. Describing herself in 2012 as "a functioning alcoholic" while shooting X-Men Origins: Wolverine in Australia in 2008, Collins credits Strait with helping her recover when "I took it all to hell ... Whatever I was doing, he was the rock, and now there’s two rocks. It's a more equal relationship, but it wasn’t always like that."
Collins was raised in a "very, very religious" family of Southern Baptists, and has sinced explored several religious faiths, describing herself as a "pretty spiritual person".

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Christina Mclarty on the New Orleans set of "The Tomb". We shot inside NASA's solid rocket booster manufacturing plant-- a massive building with not much to do now that the Space Shuttle program has ended.

I shot this using the CLS system with one SB-900 through a Lastolite tri-grip, cheated more toward the middle-right. I picked up more shine on Christina's face than I'd have liked, but in general I'm satisfied.
